Air transport refers to that transport through which people and goods are transferred or carried through the air from one place to another. It is the fastest means of transport when one compares it with road transport, rail transport or water transport. In order to understand more about this mode of transport one should look at the advantages and disadvantages of air transport
Advantages of Air Transport
Fastest means of Transport
The biggest advantage of air transport is that it is the fastest means of transport and one can travel from one part of the world to another part of the world within hours. Hence if one wants to transfer lightweight perishable goods or due to medical emergency one has to travel from one part of the world to another part of the world than air transportation is the only option as other modes of transportation will be useless in such circumstances.
Another benefit of air transport is that it requires minimal infrastructure because in case of road transport extensive road network has to be built and maintained or in case of rail transport investment is required for setting up railway tracks, railway stations and other facilities whereas in case of this mode of transport investment is required only for setting up of airport at various locations.
No Physical Barriers
Another advantage of air transportation is that it has got no physical barrier which is the case with road and rail transportation where their reach is limited due to geographical limitations. Hence in times of natural calamities like earthquakes, floods it is the air transportation which comes to the rescue as other modes of transport like road and rail transportation suffer heavy damage during such times.
Disadvantages of Air Transport
The price of air ticket is very high which results in it being not affordable to a large section of middle and lower class people of the world. Hence in simple words, its reach is limited to an affluent section of people as the majority of the world population uses road and rail modes of transport for commuting from one place to another.
Not Connected to Every Place
Another limitation of air transportation is that it is available in cities only and if one wants to go to a remote place or interior places than one has to use either road transportation or rail transportation. Hence it is not connected to every place which poses serious limitation as far as movement of people or goods is concerned.
Small carrying Capacity
It has small carrying capacity which limits its use because it can carry a maximum of 300 to 500 passengers and also it is not suitable for transportation of bulky goods which again is a limitation as one cannot transport bulky and heavy goods using this medium of transportation.
As one can see from the above that air transport has pros as well as cons but still it has its own place and one cannot ignore this medium of transportation as for some places and uses it is the air transportation which comes to the rescue.
