Advantages and Disadvantages of Being a Vegetarian

Being a Vegetarian refers to that practice following which an individual does not eat any type of meat or animal food. It is always a debatable topic because vegetarian people advocate that non vegetarian people should also give up their habit and become a vegetarian and non-vegetarian people make fun of vegetarian people. In order to have a better opinion about this, let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of being a vegetarian –

Advantages of Being a Vegetarian

It’s healthier

The biggest positive of being a vegetarian is that it is healthier because an individual who has decided to be vegan is left with few choices as compared to non-vegan people and when you have plenty of choices which in turn will mean that they will eat more which in turn results in more calories and fat getting into the body which in turn results in health problems for an individual.

Longevity of Life by Reducing the Risk of Diseases

Since vegetarian diet is based on fruits, vegetables, pulses etc…, which are good sources of fiber and antioxidants which are good for the body while non-vegetarian diet is based on meat, fish etc…, which contains fat and calories which if taken regularly will result in an invitation to many diseases. Hence one can say that vegan diet can help in increasing your life by reducing the risk of diseases which happen due to non-vegan food items.

Cheap and Environment-Friendly

Another big positive of vegetarian food items is that they are relatively cheap as compared to non-vegetarian food items and also vegan food is more environment-friendly as compared to non-vegan food items. Hence in a way being a vegetarian put less burden both on the pocket of an individual as well as on the environment.

Disadvantages of Being a Vegetarian

Left with Few Choices

The biggest problem with a vegetarian is that one is left with few choices when it comes to eating food especially if one is traveling to those countries where few vegetarian food options are there. Hence if you are home then there is no problem as you can make any vegan food you like but once you travel outside than it can be a big problem.

Going with Non-Vegetarian Friends

Another problem with being a vegetarian is that not all people are vegan and if you happen to go to restaurants for eating out with your friends who are non-vegan or go to parties than you may find yourself out of place as all will be eating non-vegetarian food items while you will either will not be eating food or eating salads and other vegan food items.

Negative Mindset towards Non-Vegetarian People

Another disadvantage is that few vegetarian people make negative mindset towards non-vegan people and because of that mindset they don’t like those people who are non-vegetarian and start hating them which is not a good thing as any hate towards an individual on the basis of what one eats is not a rational thing to do.

As one can see from the above that being a vegetarian has advantages as well as disadvantages and many times people force their opinion on others which is wrong because every individual is free to choose the food which he or she wants to eat but one should also keep in mind that too much of non-vegetarian food can adversely affect the health of an individual.
